The Stanford Dish / Foothills

The four miles of jogging and hiking paths in this popular recreation area are open to the public year-round. Stanford currently is directing a program of environmental restoration in this area that will include the use of native grasses and other plants. Information on current hours and closures for the Dish is available on the “Foothills Hotline” at (650) 926-0275.

Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve

A 1,200-acre biological preserve on the western edge of campus, Jasper Ridge is closed to the public in order to protect its fragile environments and long-term research projects from human intrusion. Docent-led tours, however, are occasionally offered. Call (650) 327-1277 for information.

Gardens and heritage trees

While there are an estimated 25,000 trees on campus, a few stand out, including a Torrey Pine, a Canary Island Palm and a Manna Gum tree. Gardens also can be found throughout campus. Highlights include the Arizona Garden adjacent to the Mausoleum, the New Guinea Sculpture Garden near Lake Lagunita and the gardens of the Inner Quad.
